Definition: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) (udtales mu:ks) er betegnelsen for åbne online-kurser, der gøres tilgængelige for mange deltagere.

Begrebet MOOC blev første gang brugt af Dave Cormier i 2008 i forbindelse med et kursus, som blev udbudt af the University of Manitoba.[1]

Der findes flere definitioner på MOOCs:

“MOOCs are courses designed for large number of participants, that can be accessed by anyone anywhere as long as they have an internet connection, are open to everyone without entry qualifications, and offer a full/complete course experience online for free.”[2]

“A massive open online course (MOOC) is a free Web-based distance learning program that is designed for the participation of large number of geographically dispersed students.”[3]

The MOOC Model for Digital Practice:

“A MOOC is an online course with the option of free and open registration, a publicly-shared curriculum, and open-ended outcomes. MOOCs integrate social networking, accessible online resources, and are facilitated by leading practitioners in the field of study. Most significantly, MOOCs build on the engagement of learners who self-organize their participation according to leaning goals, prior knowledge and skills, and common interest.”[4]
